Here’s the lowdown on what to expect at the Wine on the River Festival
On the weekend the most talented winemakers, innovative craftspeople and inspiring chefs from Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor and Robertson will be congregating on Goudmyn Farm off the R317 between Robertson and Bonnievale, to treat festival goers to all sorts of tasty things, including wine tastings from no less than 30 local wineries!
Interactive wine experiences
Cape Wine Academy will host interactive wine tastings alongside local winemakers in the #TasteTheLifestyle tent overlooking the river (R80pp, pre-book on QKR! from Sep), and if you really want to get into the thick of things, you can even hop aboard a wine safari truck.
Local winemakers will be conducting wine safaris on nearby farms, taking festival goers through the vineyards to learn more about the terroir and into underground cellars to discover the stories behind the vintages (R150pp launch special, pre-book on QKR! from Sep). Remember to keep your boot empty so that you can stock up on your favourites vintages at cellar door prices from the bulk wine tent.
What’s cooking at this year’s festival?
The boat is really being pushed out in terms of festival activities for Wine on the River in partnership with Nedbank. As always, there will be a country central market where you can browse and stock up on local produce, artisanal fare and all sorts of beautiful keepsakes. A dedicated children’s area will offer activities for all ages on a pay-as-you-go system. Proceeds from the play area will go to local schools and farm crèches.
The annual Duck Derby will take place again this year, with proceeds from the initiative going towards the Zolani Youth Choir. The popular Viljoensdrift boat cruise will offer leisurely river trips for the whole family in aid of the Breede River Hospice. You can even book a helicopter ride to take to the skies and view the action from above. Log on to the free WIFI sponsored by Breedenet to share your special memories online.
Stargazing. Open campfires. Roasted marshmallows. What if you could enjoy all of the benefits of camping without sacrificing on luxury?
Because this year you can – in a first for Wine on the River in partnership with Nedbank, we are now offering glamping accommodation on the banks of the river a mere 15 minutes from the main festival site.
The couple’s glamping weekend package includes shared tented accommodation for two people for two nights (26 & 27 October), 2 x weekend festival passes, 2 x boat cruise tickets, a shuttle to and from the campsite on Saturday, Interactive Wine Tasting and a complimentary bottle of wine from the Robertson Wine Valley. (R2000p/c launch special, pre-book on QKR! from Sep)
Fancy new tech = cashless celebrations
This year, Wine on the River in partnership with Nedbank will bring festival-goers the QKR! booking platform for simple and safe activity bookings, as well as the Masterpass scan-and-pay app for cashless transactions. These user-friendly smartphone platforms will allow you to pre-book all your activities and pay for your purchases throughout the festival without having to take out your wallet once. Easy as pie.
Paving the way for safe indulgence
With all that lovely wine in the mix, it is important to always ensure that festival goers have the means to practice safe indulgence. As part of the festival’s commitment to bringing guests a secure event, a zero-tolerance policy will be upheld with regard to drinking and driving. To support responsible tasting, shuttle services are available from central spots in Robertson, Bonnievale and Montagu to the event on Saturday.
Paid shuttles may be pre-booked via Webtickets from September. Please play by the traffic rules by not parking on the roads but in designated parking areas only. There is limited parking available so it is recommended that you save on petrol and reduce your carbon footprint by car-pooling together with family and friends.
