Into The Woods Comes to Theatre on the Bay This October

Into-The-Woods show at Theatre on the Bay

LAMTA (Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy) has announced its next full-scale production, Into The Woods, coming to Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bay from 24 October to 14 November 2026.

Following the award-winning success of Spring Awakening, LAMTA will bring Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s celebrated musical to the Cape Town stage, by special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

LAMTA Brings Into The Woods to Cape Town

Into The Woods has long been regarded as one of Sondheim’s most celebrated works, combining familiar fairy tales with a darker exploration of what happens after “happily ever after”.

The musical also reached a new generation of audiences through Disney’s star-studded 2014 film adaptation, which featured Meryl Streep as the Witch and introduced Sondheim’s score and characters to millions of viewers around the world.

Cape Town audiences will now have the opportunity to experience the story live on stage, with the LAMTA production helmed by acclaimed director Sylvaine Strike.

A Multi-Award-Winning Creative Team

Strike is joined by a multi-award-winning creative team that includes Musical Director Amy Campbell, Set and Costume Designer Marcel Meyer and Choreographer Naoline Quinzin.

David Claasen serves as Sound Designer, Charl-Johann Lingenfelder oversees Sound Effects and Ambient Engineering, while Luke Ellenbogen is the production’s Lighting Designer.

A New Take on Familiar Fairy Tales

At the heart of Into The Woods is a clever interweaving of familiar Brothers Grimm fairy tales, bringing together characters from Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack and the Beanstalk.

Their stories become connected through a childless Baker and his wife, who venture deep into the woods in search of four magical ingredients needed to break a vengeful witch’s curse.

What begins as a quest to make their wishes come true gradually reveals something much more complex.

What Happens After Happily Ever After?

First premiered in the USA in 1986, Into The Woods subverts traditional fairy-tale storytelling by looking beyond the final page of the storybook.

While Act One sees the characters seemingly secure their happily ever after, Act Two explores the consequences of their choices, greed, deceit and unchecked wishes.

Forced to band together to save their community from an angry Giant, the characters must confront grief, parental responsibility, morality and the enduring importance of community.
