The wine business on this farm forms part of a larger holistic farming business called ‘De Rust Estate’. In addition to the vineyards and cellar, there are apple and pear orchards, a Hereford stud and eco-tourism activities. This more than 2000 hectare estate forms part of the UNESCO world heritage site, the Kogelberg Biosphere, and half of the estate has been set aside for conservation in perpetuity. Dr. Paul Cluver is a founding member of the Green Mountain Eco Route – the world’s first wine and biodiversity route, and has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Drinks Business Green Awards in 2010. The farm has enjoyed BWI Champion status since 2009 and this month’s wine was voted best BWI wine in the 2013 Nedbank Green Wine Awards. This is a wonderful example that it’s not all about being organic, but about having respect for nature and using it with fairness and conscience. This wine shows the delicate floral and Turkish delight aromatics typical of this grape. These lead to a fresh, vibrant and crisp palate, packed with tropical fruit, granadilla and pineapple.
