Flavours of the Middle East and America served in a relaxed, family-run eatery, Teta Mari in Illovo is the place for delicious, fuss-free food, best enjoyed with friends over a bottle of wine and ended off with a slice of their apple cake.

Situated at the back of the small Illovo Square shopping centre, this restaurant is buzzing almost every day of the week. From people popping in for a quick workday bite, to friends tucking into a leisurely lunch or breakfast, there is something for everyone at Teta Mari. The menu has a wide range of offerings from New York deli- inspired meals to divine tastesof Israel.

You can enjoy an indulgent rare roast beef sandwich with relish and crispy onions served on a bagel, ciabatta or panini, or you can wrap your mouth around their nostalgic sloppy Joe, a very saucy mince burger, served with a packet of Big Korn Bites.

While the ‘lunch from America’ options are very good, what I love most about Teta Mari are the divine tastes of the Middle East. Making possibly the best falafel in Jo’burg, you can enjoy the falafel as a burger served on a soft bun with moreish aubergine crisps, on a platter with dips of hummus, tahini and a punchy pesto or nestled in a pita that is packed with flavor and served with a pickled salad.

Their shwarmas are also scrumptious. With deliciously spiced chicken, lamb or turkey, cooked to perfection, and accompanied by fried aubergine, Israeli salad and lashings of tahini, you won’t be disappointed.

For something sweet at the end of your meal, make sure you do not go home without trying a slice of their apple cake or cheesecake… both are outstanding.

Teta Mari also has a great takeaway menu option and deli, so if you are entertaining at home, but are not in the mood to cook, a platter or two of Middle Eastern delights will definitely impress your guests.
