It is not often that you find a restaurant in Jozi that ticks the boxes of delicious food, good location, fabulous décor, vibrant atmosphere and wonderful service. But, when you do, you know you’ve found a gem.

Escondido, situated downstairs in the Post Office Centre, Illovo, is a tapas restaurant and bar with a difference. Not only embracing small plates of Spanish food, you can enjoy tapas-size dishes that have Greek, Italian, Thai and Chinese influences, to name just a few of the flavour profiles.

I enjoyed the scallops with risotto that was beautifully presented in a large scallop shell. Set on a butternut puree and infused with lemongrass, this was one of the best risotto dishes I have tasted – deliciously creamy and perfectly al dente.

We also tried the duck wontons with a cherry dipping sauce. Lovely pulled duck in a crisp pastry casing, these were absolutely moreish. The pork belly was also a great choice – nice and crisp on top, with a citrusy flavour.

With so many divine options available, it is very easy to overindulge on the savoury tapas offerings, but you most definitely need to leave room for the dessert.

From the ‘African Surprise’ that includes a mini koeksuster, milk tart and a sugary cinnamon doughnut,

to a baked-to-perfection chocolate fondant, the beautiful trio of brûlées is a must-try too.

With a wonderful, extensive wine list and on-tap craft beer bar, Escondido is a great choice for a festive weekend drinks with friends or a delicious dinner in a fun setting.

Delicious food, good location, fabulous décor, vibrant atmosphere and wonderful service.
