99 Bottles of Wine on the Wall: Visiting The Wine Glass, Hermanus
What happens when three friends at a loose end get together to enjoy a few bottles of wine? Well, probably a lot of things but in this case, it was the beginning of an idea for a unique, localised wine bar concept. The Wine Glass Hermanus is the first of hopefully several wine and tapas bars that celebrate area-specific wines. In this case, it brings wines of the Walker Bay region together under one roof.
Wine Tasting in One Spot
While we will always love the experience of wine tasting at the farms themselves, it isn’t always possible to get to all of them in a day, especially when they’re spread over a large geographical area. What makes The Wine Glass unique is that you can sample 96 (and growing) Walker Bay wines by the glass.
An impressive wine wall (move over 99 bottles of beer) showcases what’s on offer.
Of course, sampling all of them in one evening isn’t possible (at least we don’t think) but that’s one reason to go back again and again.
Along with a price per glass, there is also a price per bottle (to enjoy at the restaurant), as well as a take-home price (cellar door) for when you find something you simply can’t leave without.
Horizontal or Vertical?
You can select wines from a number of producers across different varietals, or you can do a vertical cultivar flight. Love Chardonnay? Try six of the best from the area to find the one that’s perfect for your palate. Don’t know much about Pinot Noir? Get to know them by sampling several alongside one another.
There are a number of curated flights, with an information booklet detailing what you need to know about the wines. You can also just pick and choose what you want to drink of any varietal, and with so many choices, you’ll be kept busy for hours.
Tasty Bites
Alongside your wine tasting, you can enjoy a selection of creative and tasty small plates, designed for sharing. There are cheese and charcuterie platters, as well as undeniably fresh west coast oysters – best enjoyed with a glass of one of the 12 regional MCCs available, also available for tasting by the glass.
We dined while we enjoyed our flights and loved the super tender and juicy Steak Frites and the umami-packed Forest Mushroom Linguine.
A spot for any Season and and Reason
The stylishly contemporary interior of The Wine Glass, with pops of turquoise blue, make it a stunning place for a celebration. It’s also casual enough for lunch with friends or date night with your special someone.
The outdoor area is a summer must-visit, where the sunshine and blue skies of the Overberg can be enjoyed while you discover your favourite wines.
The team are knowledgeable and the service is swift and it makes for a really fun and unique experience, with many wine-related talking points along the way.
We look forward to the rollout of other Wine Glass venues in other regions such as Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.
