This estate is home to many intricate tales. ‘The Short Story Collection’ shares some of these moments, the people and the experiences, revealing the rich and flavourful character of their wines. The estate takes its name from 19th century owner, Marthinus Laurentius Neethling, who served as mayor of Stellenbosch, and was also a member of the old Cape Parliament. This acclaimed Weisser Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc Noble Late Harvest is named ‘The Maria’ in honour of Maria Magdalena Marais, the resourceful and feisty young widow who took over the building of the estate’s manor house, after the death of her husband, Charles, in 1813. The home was completed the following year and is now a national monument. Together with her two sons, Maria was responsible for developing a vibrant and viable farming operation that included 80 000 vines. This wine shows marmalade, honey and dried apricot, with the perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. Enjoy it with a rich cheese platter, or on its own, as the perfect ending to a memorable meal.
