Liège Café, Sandown
'Pain au chocolats and other Viennoiseries are baked fresh daily…’
When you think of the flakiest croissants and the softest, most flavoursome macarons in the world, images of beautiful French cake shops and Belgian bakeries come to mind. But, you don’t need to travel to Europe to enjoy these delights; you can tuck into these authentic treats right here in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Owned and run by fourth generation master Belgian pastry chef, Jean Francois Schevenels, Liège is a bakery, café and restaurant that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves the most incredible baked treats.
Before moving to Johannesburg, Schevenels ran a cake shop and cafe in Liège, Belgium, and has also had experience working as a pastry chef in Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe. He is now bringing the classic cuisine of Liège to the City of Gold, and we couldn’t be happier.
Croissants, pain au chocolats and other Viennoiseries are baked fresh daily, and vibrant macarons are created with love and care, leaving enough time for the gooey centre to soften and flavour the meringue shells to perfection.
Traditional French-style cakes are baked and decorated at Liège, too. Glistening with a chocolate topping and beautifully decorated, you can enjoy flavours such as dark chocolate mousse with milk chocolate, hazelnut praline and crème brûlée to name just a few. Classic sachertorte and black forest cake are sold here too.
These culinary delights are beautifully presented in glass display counters, alongside Michel Sauvenier’s, handcrafted bespoke chocolates. You can enjoy these treats at the café, or take away a pretty box of patisseries for a gift, or to enjoy at home.
Elegant and filled with charm, with blue and ivory white décor, soft chairs and damask wallpaper. Step into Liège Café where you can enjoy a respite from chaotic city life; reconnect over great coffee and a mouthwatering treat in this truly continental atmosphere.
