This modern Japanese gem on the Camps bay strip offers unique Japanese fare in a contemporary style. The space is reminiscent of Kyoto in Spring, with cherry blossom trees displayed in the centre of the space, while the rest of the restaurant offers lavish and innovative design. Apart from the food and decor, the service is impeccable – ask for Felix, he is well versed on the UMI offerings and a wonderful host.

The special is a set menu comprised of starter options like Salt and Pepper Chilli Squid with ginger chimichurri, Crispy Shrimp Wontons with candied chilli citrus syrup and Octopus Carpaccio with smoked paprika and garlic aioli. From the mains, there is a drool-worthy Sweet and Sour Short Rib with wasabi and miso mash, or otherwise try the Chargrilled Hake with coconut sambal and bonito mash. From the dessert menu, the Dark Chocolate Brownie with chocolate ganache and raspberry sorbet, and the Lemongrass Panna Cotta with mango and candied chilli are noteworthy. Amazing value for money and some seriously tasty food! If you aren’t feeling the set menu, there are other main options like the Sirloin, Confit Duck Leg and Prawn Laksa Curry at a range of prices.

Visitors to the V&A Waterfront are spoilt for choice when it comes to places to eat but if you are looking for a more upmarket dining experience, then Firefish is it. Their winter specials menu follows the format of the regular menu and is a blend of meat and seafood dishes, with an Asian fusion flair. The winter menu offers some really great value for money options – a 2-course menu at R180 pp or 3-courses for R230 pp.

The portions are generous and include choices such as a killer dish of Pork Cheek in a soy broth with cabbage, sesame and a hint of chilli to start. For mains a seriously good Malaysian-inspired Fish Curry or a dish of fall-apart tender Braised Beef with mash. If you aren’t up for the set menu, there is a good selection of other dishes such as a seafood platter priced at R240 and Grilled Beef with egg noodles and mushrooms at R120. Expect lots of flavour, great value and an all round great dining experience.
