Audiences can experience the phenomenon once again at Theatre on the Bay, Camps Bay, where this latest production delivers all the glitter, glamour and delicious absurdity fans could hope for. And honestly? We were completely swept up in it from the moment the curtain rose.

Famously banned in South Africa during the apartheid era for its sexual themes and subversive nature, the show has always challenged convention and pushed boundaries. But beneath all the corsets, fishnets and outrageous innuendo lies something incredibly joyful: a celebration of individuality, freedom and not taking life too seriously.
Theatre on the Bay Is the Perfect Setting
Presented by Pieter Toerien Productions, in association with Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy, this production feels perfectly at home at Theatre on the Bay. The intimate size of the theatre lends itself beautifully to the immersive nature of the show.
From the first notes of “Science Fiction/Double Feature, the atmosphere was electric, and throughout the show people (myself included) were singing, laughing and shouting responses at the stage. You simply can’t help but get caught up in it all. The audience participation alone makes it one hell of a fun night out, but in such an intimate venue, every moment feels interactive.
Outstanding Cast Performances Bring the Show to Life
Directed by Steven Stead, the production strikes the perfect balance between nostalgia and fresh theatrical flair. Leading the cast is Craig Urbani as Frank-N-Furter, delivering a commanding and magnetic performance filled with charisma, humour and theatrical extravagance. Urbani owns the stage from the moment he appears, embodying the iconic role with confidence, swagger and just the right amount of theatrical mischief (even without Frank-N-Furter’s usual wig!).
Equally memorable are Anna Olivier as Columbia and Jasmine Minter as Magenta, both of whom bring brilliant energy to their roles. Their performances are playful, polished and endlessly entertaining, adding even more sparkle to an already stellar ensemble.

The vocals throughout the production are exceptional, with the cast effortlessly bringing the legendary soundtrack to life.
Spectacular Costumes and Stage Design
One of the standout elements of the show is its spectacular visual presentation. The costumes are vibrant and gloriously over-the-top, perfectly capturing the camp aesthetic that has made the musical so iconic.
Mention must also be made of the stage dressing and set design, which completely transform Theatre on the Bay. Every detail feels thoughtfully considered and adds to the wonderfully surreal world unfolding on stage. We found ourselves constantly looking around to take in all the tiny visual details woven throughout the production.
Why Rocky Horror Still Captivates Audiences
What makes Rocky Horror so enduring is that, beneath the outrageous costumes and wildly silly plot, it never pretends to be anything other than pure theatrical escapism. The story is gloriously ridiculous – and that is precisely the point. It is camp in the very best sense of the word: exaggerated, cheeky, self-aware and completely committed to the bit.
And yet, somehow, it continues to resonate decade after decade.
What makes Rocky Horror so enduring is that, beneath the outrageous costumes and wildly silly plot, it never pretends to be anything other than pure theatrical escapism.
Perhaps it is because we crave spaces where weirdness, individuality and self-expression are celebrated so unapologetically. Or perhaps it is simply because there is nothing quite like the collective joy of watching a theatre full of people abandon their inhibitions for a few hours and fully embrace the madness.
