Revisiting Angala Boutique Hotel: A Sanctuary in the Winelands

Angala Pool Area

In the years since my last visit to Angala Boutique Hotel (just post-COVID), the world has slowly regained its rhythm, but one thing remains unchanged – the need for rest and revitalisation. Returning to Angala, I was reminded that some places are simply meant to soothe the soul and restore equilibrium.

A Renewed Sense of Calm

Nestled within the Simonsberg conservancy, Angala has undergone a transformation, unveiling newly renovated luxury rooms that effortlessly blend elegance and comfort. These thoughtful enhancements, including new decks, revamped bathrooms and re-styled rooms, add to the sense of calm that already existed.

Lush gardens, carpet-like lawns and stunning views of the valley and vineyards beyond remain as captivating as ever. In the early morning’s first light, the golden hue and shimmering water of the dam beyond are really quite breathtaking.

Angala’s setting feels more like a private retreat than a hotel – an impression that is felt the moment you step onto your stoep and take in the views.

The garden reconciles human art and wild nature, hard work and deep pleasure, spiritual practice and the material world. It is a magical place because it is not divided. – Thomas Moore

A Garden of Dreams

A new highlight is the magnificent herb, fruit and vegetable garden, masterfully designed by internationally celebrated and award-winning landscape artist Leon Kluge. Located on a slope just behind the hotel, this is well worth a wander through.

This vibrant space is more than a garden; it’s a place to breathe deeply and feel connected to the earth. It is also where produce is harvested by the chefs, which is then used in the  kitchen to create beautiful food, which is another new highlight at Angala.

A Feast for the Senses

Talented and acclaimed whole foods chef and cookbook author Samantha Dormehl, has created a new seasonal menu. Her dishes are more than just meals; they are an experience that nourishes both body and soul.

For dinner, we started with a creamy, perfectly balanced mushroom risotto, followed by a tender ostrich dish for my husband and a beautifully layered aubergine dish for me – like a melanzane but better. It was a delicious meal that felt as nourishing as promised.

Breakfasts were also a wonderful reason to get out of bed and start the day – freshly brewed cappuccinos served alongside fruit with yoghurt and housemade granola, and a menu of tasty hot options including omelettes, French toast and more.

Suites of Comfort

Our suite was every bit as inviting as I remembered, now even more beautiful with the addition of a new deck. Inside, the luxurious king-sized bed and comfortable lounge area, complete with fireplace and sherry to stave off the winter chill, set the stage for relaxation; while the bathroom, newly refreshed, featured a beautiful shower and a deep tub for unwinding. Muted neutral tones and plush linens add to the feel.

Outside on the deck is a private outdoor shower, but given the crisp winter air, we weren’t brave enough to test it out!

Self-Care and Wellness

Angala’s philosophy of wellness remains at its heart, with a self-spa approach that encourages you to take your time. The eco pool, surrounded by aquatic plants and free of chemicals, remains a soothing highlight. We alternated between the heated pool and the invigorating cold pool, followed by languid sessions in the steam room and sauna. The setup, without the need for bookings or separate areas, makes it especially enjoyable for couples wanting to share the experience.

If you’re in the mood for further indulgence, in-room spa treatments are easily arranged, bringing relaxation right to your doorstep.

“Each key accesses part of the cosmic data, for example how to use the energy of the sun, the wisdom of the trees, the messages of animals or how to connect to angels,” – from The Keys to the Universe by Diana Cooper and Kathy Crosswell, after which Angala’s name was inspired.

Also, you’ll find a yoga mat in the bathroom, or take your own; the gardens or your deck are ideal for a session of matwork or a quiet meditation. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding a quiet corner to reflect.

The Beauty of Slowing Down

This visit was perfectly timed – after a busy start to the year, we were in desperate need of a place to reset. Angala’s invitation to slow down, to breathe deeply and to reconnect with what matters most couldn’t have come at a better moment. Whether reading on the stoep, drifting off in the sun or enjoying the heated spa pool, every moment felt like a quiet moment of personal luxury, of time gained back, if you will.
