Contemporary Style & Exceptional Food at Stanford Valley Country Lodge

Just outside the charming village of Stanford, surrounded by the rolling hills and rugged beauty of the Akkedisberg mountains, you’ll find Stanford Valley Country Lodge. This gem of a venue offers a country escape that feels a world away from Cape Town, which is feeling increasingly busy and frenetic. Just 150 km from town, this much-loved Overberg retreat combines wide-open spaces, beautifully appointed accommodation, exceptional food and warm hospitality.

Long known for its peaceful setting, fynbos-covered trails and picturesque farm cottages, Stanford Valley has evolved into a stylish country destination. Thoughtfully refreshed interiors, a beautiful restaurant and bar, and an ever-growing collection of four-legged residents have added new appeal to an already special property.

A Stylish New Chapter for Stanford Valley

At the heart of the property is the Manor House, a beautifully reimagined space that brings an unexpected but sophisticated mid-century aesthetic to its country setting. Natural timber tones, open brickwork, carefully selected furniture, statement lighting and an eclectic collection of art give the interiors a distinctive personality.

Adding to the experience is their own range of estate wines, produced from grapes grown on the property’s decomposed-granite and shale soils. Under the guidance of winemaker Helanie Olivier, the wines are made in a classical style with minimal intervention, allowing the unique Stanford Valley terroir to shine through. The collection includes the Uitbundig Brut Rosé Cap Classique (which we tried and loved), Lieverd Chenin Blanc, Gesellig Chardonnay, Vrypostig Pinot Noir and Eersteling Syrah/Grenache Noir.

The restaurant and bar are warm and inviting, striking a balance between contemporary design and relaxed country hospitality. The stylish bar is the ideal place to settle in with a drink before dinner, while the restaurant offers a welcoming space to enjoy a leisurely meal overlooking the surrounding landscape.

It’s a setting that feels stylish enough for a special occasion, but comfortable enough to dine in daily if you’re there for an extended stay.

Manor House Restaurant: One of South Africa’s Best

Food has always been central to the Stanford Valley experience, and Manor House restaurant continues to build on its reputation as one of the Overberg’s standout dining destinations.

The restaurant recently achieved an impressive milestone, placing 11th out of more than 2,000 South African restaurants listed on the Dineplan platform.

It’s a fitting recognition for a kitchen that delivers exceptional food without unnecessary fuss. The cooking is rooted in generous, homestyle country fare, but with an elevated approach. Beautifully prepared ingredients, thoughtful flavour combinations and confident execution result in food that is comforting and memorable.

Expect the warmth and generosity of a country kitchen, presented with the finesse of a restaurant that takes its food seriously. Whether visiting for a long lunch, a special dinner or simply making the restaurant the centrepiece of a weekend away, Manor House alone is well worth the journey.

A Country Retreat

Accommodation at Stanford Valley is spread across a collection of whitewashed cottages set among expansive lawns, established gardens and mountain scenery.

The rooms combine country comfort with thoughtful contemporary touches, offering inviting spaces to unwind in. Wood-burning fireplaces make winter stays particularly appealing, while the peaceful surroundings and easy access to the outdoors are ideal for warmer months, where activities like mountain biking is popular, with trails leaving from the grounds.

For families or groups of friends, the larger cottages provide the convenience of shared accommodation without sacrificing privacy.

For something a little more secluded, Waterblom is a beautiful private cottage that offers an especially peaceful retreat. With its own sense of space and privacy, it’s an appealing option for guests wanting to slow down, enjoy the surroundings and make the most of a few days in the countryside.

Farm Life, Fynbos Trails & Some Unusual Residents

Part of Stanford Valley’s charm is its connection to the surrounding farmland and natural landscape.

The paddocks are home to horses, miniature ponies (so sweet), a collection of friendly donkeys and two rather charismatic alpacas – Karel and Allen – who have become part of the property’s appeal.  A wander around the grounds offers plenty of opportunities to meet them all and enjoy the slower rhythm of farm life. Guaranteed by the time you leave, your phone reel will be packed with pictures of all of the resident animals (just me?).

Beyond the paddocks, guests can explore the fynbos-covered walking trails, take a mountain bike out for a scenic ride or enjoy a refreshing swim in the farm dam, framed by the mountains.

Days spent at Stanford Valley can be as active or as unhurried as you like. An early morning walk, a long lunch, an afternoon spent reading and a sundowner as the light fades over the valley.

Exploring Stanford and the Overberg

Stanford Valley is also ideally positioned for exploring some of the Overberg’s most appealing attractions.

The historic village of Stanford is just a short drive away, with its charming streets, independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely cruise along the Klein River or explore the area’s growing collection of wine estates and artisanal producers.

Nearby Raka offers wine tastings, while the Kleinriver Cheese Shop in Stanford is a favourite for locally produced cheeses, and Walker Bay Estate for wines and Birkenhead craft beers. Wildlife enthusiasts can visit Panthera Africa, a sanctuary dedicated to the welfare of rescued big cats.

Stanford Valley is also ideally positioned for exploring some of the Overberg’s most appealing attractions.

Further afield, Hermanus is famous for its seasonal whale watching, while the coastal villages and scenic routes of the Overberg offer plenty of opportunities for day trips.

A Country Escape Worth Returning To

Stanford Valley has always had the natural beauty and warm hospitality that make for a memorable country getaway. Its refreshed interiors, exceptional restaurant and charming accommodation have added another dimension to the experience.

Go for the mountain views and peaceful surroundings, stay for the food, and don’t be surprised if the alpacas steal a little of the spotlight.
