Quiet Luxury & Light-filled Spaces at Le Petit Manoir, Franschhoek

Le Petite Manoir, Franschhoek pool

Of the many small towns around the Western Cape, Franschhoek remains at the top of our list to return to. Fondly referred to by locals as ‘the village’ – its walkable centre, close-knit community and quaint, intimate vibe make it feel this way. With stunning hotels, wine estates and award-winning restaurants, it manages that rare balance of intimate village life, blended with world-class sophistication, that few others get right.

With an array of beautiful properties to choose from, none is better placed in the heart of the village than Le Petit Manoir. We returned to stay after several years to find the property has undergone many changes – the formal restaurant has been replaced by a charming deli, new pool suites on the lower level have been created, and a light-filled conservatory and enviable pool area with beautiful mosaic artwork make it a cocoon of stylish luxury that’s hard to leave.

Golden Light & Greenery

The pool suite we stayed in is one of the new additions to the hotel, and what a smart choice for a valley that is known to heat up past the mid-thirties in summer. Tones of green flowed from the emerald plunge pool tiles to soft furnishings of the open-plan room and bathroom, complete with a freestanding bath. Cream Smeg appliances added just the right modern touch. Everything seemed thoughtfully curated, from textures that invited touch to patterns that melded together in perfect harmony.

The private pool courtyard became our sanctuary. Mornings began with coffee alongside the sounds of the fountain, and afternoons melted into wine and conversation on the comfortable lounger section alongside the pool. Few experiences rival the luxury of stepping directly from your bedroom into your own private pool courtyard. This is a rarity that elevates Le Petit Manoir beyond typical boutique offerings.

Mention must be made of the choice of robes – impossibly soft and enveloping, making those restful lounging moments, although simple, feel indulgent. Molton Brown amenities in the bathroom were another detail that spoke to owners who understand that luxury lies in these curated choices.

The Heart of the Hotel

The new conservatory is the heart of the hotel and feels like a sophisticated greenhouse. A pitched glass roof lets in streams of morning light, which filter through a curated collection of plant holders hanging overhead; the space is filled with light and the quiet energy of greenery.

As staying guests, we enjoyed a tasty breakfast buffet selection, with fresh fruit, housemade granola and pastries, as well as cooked options from the kitchen. If the hotel has capacity, they allow outside guests to dine as well; however, there is also seating at the front of the hotel, which is an excellent place to enjoy coffee and a pastry from the deli.

The Deli itself is like a treasure chest of local baked treats, cheeses, charcuterie and more. You can order pizza and light meals, and browse a collection of artwork, ceramics, candles, gifting and more.

The conservatory connects and opens out onto the sunny pool terrace with mesmerising mosaic artworks. The tiled bar area adjacent is ideal for sundowners, and striped loungers invite afternoon reading sessions. These spaces feel designed for the kind of traveller who appreciates beauty but doesn’t need constant entertainment – places where you can simply be.

Village Life at Your Doorstep

Stepping out of Le Petit Manoir’s front door, you are immediately part of Franschhoek’s gentle village rhythm. The Saturday morning market was a two-minute stroll away, and world-class wine estates are a short drive away.

The beauty of staying in the village heart is that you can browse art galleries and shops after breakfast, or simply sit with morning coffee watching Franschhoek wake up around you. For dinner we were able to wander down through the village and choose from a plethora of options from casual to fine-dining.

The central position extends beyond walkability – when you do want to venture further afield, tuk-tuks depart directly from outside the hotel, and the wine tram station sits just minutes away, making the entire valley accessible without the need for a rental car.

Why You Should Book

With only ten rooms, every interaction at Le Petit Manoir feels genuinely personal. Staff remember your coffee preferences, suggest wine farms and restaurants based on actual conversation rather than standard scripts, and somehow anticipate needs before you voice them. It’s the kind of service that comes from owners who’ve travelled themselves and understand what makes a stay memorable.

The changes, from restaurant to deli, renovated rooms (which also include an upstairs suite complete with a kol-kol hot tub), have created a different energy, but the soul remains unchanged. This is still a place where every detail speaks to thoughtfulness.

The magic of a place like Le Petit Manoir is that they don’t just offer accommodation, they provide a thoughtful and tasteful experience that transforms a simple getaway into something unforgettable.
