Nine Lives Johannesburg is a hidden speakeasy tucked between the fourth and fifth floors of the HYDE Johannesburg Hotel in Rosebank. Inspired by the glamour and mood of the 1970s, the venue introduces an after-hours drinking and dining concept designed to feel intimate, atmospheric and slightly mysterious.
Unlike traditional hotel bars, Nine Lives is intentionally concealed, creating a sense of discovery for guests who find their way inside. The result is an exclusive space that blends vintage inspiration with modern hospitality – a place where the city’s night crowd can slip away from the bustle of Rosebank into something more secretive.
A 70s-Inspired Cocktail Bar With Precision Mixology
At the heart of Nine Lives Johannesburg is a cocktail programme focused on inventive techniques and premium spirits. The curated back bar features rare international labels that are difficult to find elsewhere in South Africa, while the drinks menu leans into both nostalgia and innovation.

Signature carbonated martinis and clarified classic cocktails headline the offering, giving familiar drinks a modern twist while maintaining the elegance of traditional mixology.
According to HYDE Johannesburg General Manager Jessica Redinger, the concept was created as a space that allows guests to embrace a different side of themselves.
“What excites us most is creating a space the city hasn’t seen before: a one-of-a-kind after-dark hideaway built on mood and intention,” says Redinger.
“We called it Nine Lives for its feline spirit – curious and adaptable. It’s a place where people can slip into their ‘other’ selves: the after-work self, the night self, the version that wants sound, smoke and an air of mystery.”
Elevated Comfort Food at Nine Lives Johannesburg
Complementing the cocktail menu is a food offering developed by Chef Marc Robert, Group Executive Chef at Colada Hospitality and the culinary force behind the award-winning Proud Mary.
The menu embraces what Robert describes as “accessible luxury”, combining global flavours with relaxed comfort dishes. Expect plates such as smoky bonito risotto, tuna tostadas and pork dumplings – dishes designed to be shared and enjoyed alongside cocktails.
“It brings a new and exciting culinary energy to Johannesburg,” Robert explains. “Our dishes blend global influences while still feeling approachable and unpretentious.”

A New After-Dark Destination at HYDE Johannesburg
Nine Lives forms part of HYDE Johannesburg’s expanding culinary offering, which already includes the acclaimed Proud Mary Restaurant and Proud Coffee on the hotel’s ground floor.

The speakeasy aims to attract both hotel guests and locals looking for a distinctive nightlife experience in Rosebank – one that combines design, cocktails and contemporary cuisine in a single space.
Nine Lives Johannesburg is open Monday to Saturday from 16h00, with reservations available via Dineplan and walk-ins welcome.
