Explore the Estate’s Rich History

Alto Wine Estate is a leading red wine producer, nestled atop the Helderberg Mountains in Stellenbosch. They are an estate with a rich heritage and have been producing world-class wines for over a hundred years.

Being the oldest red-wine-only producer in South Africa, they are one of the few wine estates to have only had five winemakers in their century-old history, with two being a father and son duo.

The first vintage in their iconic Alto Rouge was produced in 1922 and after maturation to market-ready condition, was exported for sale to the UK in 1924.

This year, they are also celebrating an extraordinary milestone at their estate with the production of the 100th consecutive vintage of their Alto Rouge red blend.

Meet the Winemaker

Winemaker, Bertho van der Westhuizen, is honoured that their cellar and vineyard team have the opportunity to be part of the harvest and making of this 100th vintage. Alto’s portfolio of wines is small and curated, as Bertho treats each wine as he would their flagship blend.

Their winemaker’s philosophy is built around producing wines that are best suited to the Stellenbosch terroir. Each vine on their estate is specifically chosen according to location and soil type in order to yield the highest quality grapes. From their iconic Alto Rouge to their exceptional Alto Estate Blend, their wines ensure quality and consistency throughout.

Alto Tasting Room

Alto Wine’s tasting room is the perfect intimate destination to visit this winter and enjoy their award-winning red wines in front of the fireplace.

Guests will also have the opportunity to stroll through their barrel cellar and learn about the rich heritage and legacy that makes Alto what it is today.

Biltong & Wine Pairing

Alto Wine Estate has four tasting experiences to choose from, including their popular biltong and wine pairing; this pairing experience is a true journey of flavours and includes five of their wines. The wines are paired with four types of biltong and a blue cheese tasting, to end off.

The biltong has been cured using Alto wines and specially spiced to pair with each wine and bring out the full-bodied intensity and flavour that Alto wines are known for. They also offer cheese or charcuterie platters that can be enjoyed alongside any of their tasting experiences, which are perfect for sharing with family or friends.

Alto Wines looks forward to welcoming you to their estate and creating the perfect tasting experience.
