Award-winning Stellenbosch restaurant DUSK has unveiled a meaningful new collaboration with the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) and Clay Café Paarl, bringing together fine dining, design, and social impact. The initiative uses food as a platform to spark awareness and encourage support for local animal welfare efforts.
A Dish Inspired by Loyalty: A Man’s Best Friend
At the heart of the collaboration is A Man’s Best Friend, a playful yet refined dish created by Executive Chef Callan Austin. The dish features a beautifully cut and perfectly seasoned tartare, in-between bone-shaped sablé biscuits, with an umami-rich emulsion – a nostalgic nod to flavours a dog (and their human) would love, elevated through DUSK’s signature craftsmanship.
Hand-Painted Bowls with a Personal Story
Each serving is presented in a hand-painted ceramic dog bowl created in collaboration with Clay Café Paarl. Every bowl bears the name of a dog the DUSK team met during a visit to AWSS, grounding the experience in real stories and genuine connection. A selection of bowls also honours pets belonging to the DUSK team, further personalising the project.
From the Kitchen to the Kennel: Supporting AWSS
The collaboration was inspired by Chef Callan Austin’s own adoption journey with AWSS. To better understand the organisation’s work, the DUSK brigade spent time at the shelter, meeting the dogs and learning about the daily realities of animal welfare. Guests at DUSK are encouraged to support AWSS through donations, food contributions, volunteering, or by painting and donating bowls via Clay Café Paarl.
Hospitality with Heart at DUSK
Now featured on both of DUSK’s summer menus, A Man’s Best Friend reflects the restaurant’s belief that hospitality can be heartfelt, intentional, and impactful. In an industry often seen as exclusive, DUSK continues to show that fine dining can also be inclusive, compassionate, and with a special, heartfelt purpose.
