A Double Vintage High for Lomond Wines

Words: Jess Spiro

During a recent review on South African White Blends and Old Vines, the prestigious International Wine Review (IWR) rated both Lomond SSV 2015 and Lomond SSV 2014 at 90 points and 89 points respectively.

Launched in 2005, the IWR provides the global wine trade (importers, distributors, retailers, sommeliers) and wine enthusiasts, with current, accurate information regarding important wines and regions of the world. They travel extensively to seek out the finest and most interesting niche wines and producers.

Noted during their last visit to South Africa was the continuous striving of our wine makers towards producing top quality wines, and in recent years particularly Chenin Blanc, White Blends and wines produced from Old Vines. While many different white blends exist, the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blends still dominate.

According to the IWR’s latest South African report, the best Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon comes from cool coastal areas like Cape Agulhas, Walker Bay, Elgin and Bot River and Constantia. Nestled in the valley of the Uilenkraal River in the Gansbaai area, Lomond is one of only a few wine farms in the Cape Agulhas region.

The Lomond SSV 2015 shows a high-toned bouquet and carries over a densely flavoured palate with a bright, racy acidity. It finishes off with very fresh, key lime notes.

With an additional year of bottle age, the Lomond SSV 2014 seems much broader, but does not loose the freshness and hints of citrus. The palate is more compliant, riper with richer flavours.

These highly rated wines are available from specialist boutique outlets, as well as online from the Bergkelder Vinoteque at a price of R80.00

Lomond Wines was established in July 2004 as a joint venture between Distell and Lomond Properties. Lomond is a member of both the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy and the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI), which reward producers for sustainable wine-growing practices.
