Charango Barbacoa Grill Opens on Bree Street

Words: Crush

What was previously Charango on the corner of Bree and Church Streets, has undergone a recent revamp and change of ownership and is now Charango Barbacoa – a new South American grill house. Borne out of a love of food and travel the space offers a new look, new menu and a vibe that’s perfect for the upcoming summer season.

The Vibe Charango Barbacoa

Charango is a South American casual dining spot with open flow layout; with seating outside on the sidewalk, internal seating where you can watch the comings and goings of busy Bree Street, as well as indoor seating.

Whitewashed brick meets wooden floors and white tiled walls with cosy elements such as a bric-a-brac collection of South American framed photographs of gauchos and campesinos, old-fashioned lamps and books, vintage travel posters and wall maps set the scene.

Buenos Aires meets Cape Town

The menu is dedicated to a selection of superb cuts of meat which are written up on a chalkboard daily. Expect generous grass-fed, free-range cuts that will be cooked to absolute juicy perfection. While there is an a la carte menu, the focus really is on these amazing cuts and they are cooked with respect and care. The rib-eye and beef rib, amongst others, are highly recommended.

The rest of the menu is a mix of  South American flavours, expect items such as ceviche, tacos and tataki, as well as fresh salads. The bar is in a fantastic spot that allows you to soak up the Cape Town atmosphere whilst having the option of enjoying a wide variety of locally sourced wines and craft beers.
