Bold, Bright & Unforgettable – The Woman & Her K9 Partner Protecting Table Mountain National Park

This Women’s Month, we’re celebrating the women who live brightly, lead boldly and leave an unforgettable mark wherever and whenever they go. They are the women who turn hardship into hope, lift others as they rise and remind us that true strength is found in partnership.

In collaboration with ClemenGold®, we’re shining a light on those whose courage, generosity and zest for life inspire brighter futures. Much like the fruit nurtured by ClemenGold’s dedicated growers, their influence begins with strong roots and grows through care, patience and purpose.

For more than 20 years, ClemenGold® has made everyday life simpler, tastier and brighter. More than a delicious, virtually seedless mandarin, it is a wholesome gesture that says, “I thought of you.” Each ClemenGold® is sun-ripened, handpicked and carefully packed, reflecting the passion and dedication that have made it a trusted favourite.

That same spirit of care lies at the heart of Nicole’s * work as a K9 handler and S.E.A.M. (Sea, Earth, Air and Mountain) operator for SANParks (South African National Parks). With Leah, her loyal Dutch Shepherd partner, by her side, Nicole patrols the park, working to keep it safe and protect the land she is so passionate about preserving.

Born for This

Nicole began her journey with Table Mountain National Park in 2014 as a Conservation Work Integrated Learning (WIL) student while completing her National Diploma in Nature Conservation, graduating in 2015. But her path to conservation began long before that. “I always knew I wanted to work with nature and was born with a passion for the environment,” she says. “This was the reason I studied nature conservation and the reason I’m in this field of work.”

“I was born for this. This work is a part of me.”

After joining SANParks as a Field Ranger in the Silvermine Wetlands section in 2016, Nicole’s dedication to conservation and law enforcement was recognised with Excellent Performance in the Workplace awards in both 2017 and 2019.

Her advice to her younger self and future conservationists: “Be a sponge – soak up as much information and experience from the rangers, volunteers, managers and scientists around you.”

That same mindset has shaped her journey – one built on learning, perseverance and a willingness to embrace every opportunity to grow. More than a job, her work is part of her life’s purpose: “I was born for this. This work is a part of me,” shares Nicole.

In 2021, she volunteered to join the Park’s elite S.E.A.M. unit after completing a demanding selection process. Driven by her passion for specialist conservation law enforcement, Nicole also pursued K9 handler training. Upon graduating in December 2021, she qualified as both a S.E.A.M. operator and K9 handler, receiving the Best Handler Award for her outstanding performance.

Today, she is one of the longest-serving female K9 handlers and S.E.A.M. operators – a feat that is greater than her personal achievements alone. “I feel like I am an example, and I hope there are many more women who follow in my footsteps,” she says.

Being a woman in conservation and law enforcement has also meant challenging assumptions. “Suspects and perpetrators look at me and think I’m the weakest link because of my size, but they soon discover that’s not the case.”

Nicole’s zest for life and sense of strength are central to how she approaches her work. To her, strength means “endurance.” “Being cold, hungry and tired, but still getting the job done because that is required of you.” And when the going gets tough, she leans on her faith. “Knowing that God is watching over me and guiding me keeps me grounded,” she says.

The Power of Partnership

Her work has taken her into some of the most challenging situations, but it is ultimately her partnership with her trusty K9 companion, Leah, that lies at the heart of what she does. Their connection is indescribable. “Her bond with me is unlike anything I have experienced before. I cannot even put it into words; it’s so special.”

“Leah is my eyes and ears in the field. I follow her lead.”

Since qualifying as a K9 handler, Nicole and Leah have played a pivotal role in numerous successful operations, including the apprehension of key suspects within Table Mountain National Park. More than an ordinary work partner, “Leah is my eyes and ears in the field. I follow her lead.”

“During an operation on Lion’s Head, Leah once detected the presence of a gunman before anyone else knew he was in the area. She alerted the team, ultimately resulting in his arrest.”

Handlers and K9 teams like Nicole and Leah play a crucial role in protecting Table Mountain National Park – they are often hidden in plain sight or work tirelessly behind the scenes. “There are times when we don’t want to be seen to apprehend criminals during sting operations,” Nicole explains. “Just because you don’t see us, it doesn’t mean that we’re not there.”

Nicole’s dedication to protecting the Park has continued to be recognised. In 2025, she received another Excellent Performance in the Workplace award and was appointed Sergeant of the Table Mountain National Park K9 Unit, the position she currently holds.

No Dream Too Wild

Behind the achievements and accolades is a woman who sees her work as part of something much bigger. For Nicole, Women’s Month is a time to “reflect on all the sacrifices and hard work that other women have done for us in order for us to reap the benefits now.”

She believes women bring a unique strength to conservation and environmental protection. “Women are thinkers and planners and have a great internal strength, which makes us the best operators.”

It is this very belief in the strength of women that makes Nicole’s story so inspiring. Her advice to young women who dream of working outdoors or protecting nature is to resist the temptation to compare themselves to others. “Don’t stop fighting for your dream; even a small step forward is a step forward.” “Use your strengths and improve your weaknesses,” she adds.

There is no limit to what you can achieve.

When she isn’t working, Nicole finds her own sense of renewal beside the ocean. She loves the sea, a place where she can recharge and reconnect with the natural world that has always been important in her life. For her, nature carries a deeper lesson: “That the Creator is in charge of it all.”

Her faith and family are equally important sources of inspiration. The woman who inspires her most is her sister – “a strong, loving, God-fearing woman, mother, wife, homemaker, employee, friend and a beautiful example of internal strength.”

When asked what she hopes young women see when they hear her story, she says that she wants them to see that anything is possible – even your wildest dreams. “You can be your own superhero,” says Nicole. “You can jump out of helicopters, go on boat chases and catch the bad guys.” There is no limit to what you can achieve.
