Good Vibrations and Tasty Food at Surfshack, Camps Bay

The Kove Collection is well-known for its collection of restaurants up and down the Atlantic Seaboard; Surfshack in Camps Bay is the latest addition. With its relaxed beachy vibe and elevated food offering, it hits the sweet spot between casual and upmarket squarely in the middle and is going to be packed to the gills this summer.

Beachy Keen

Surfshack is located in what was previously UMI, so a level up and overlooking the Camps Bay vista. With white sands, sunset views and the smell of coconut sunscreen, you can’t help but feel the summer vibe.

The restaurant interior is perfect for its beachside location – tasselled umbrellas, neutral colours and wood elements give it a cool, chilled atmosphere without feeling pretentious. You can dust off the sand and pop in for lunch straight off the beach, or doll up and enjoy a sophisticated sundowner supper. surfshack camps bay surfshack camps bay

The Menu

The menu is designed to fit its beachy location and has a wide variety of options from casual burgers and woodfired pizzas to more elevated dishes like baked whole fish and The Seafood Feast.

From the Shareables menu, we picked the Rice Crispy Prawns (on our waiter’s recommendation) and they were so good! Prawns are de-shelled, rolled in rice crispies and then deep-fried whole, they are crunchy and golden – everything you want in a great snack.

We also loved the salt and pepper baby squid and the cured salmon, both enjoyed with a delicious cocktail.

Main Attraction

It was a tough call when it came to choosing mains as there are so many great sounding dishes – it really depends on the experience you are after. If you want something casual, there are options like the Hot Pastrami Dog or Honey Fried Chicken Burger.

My dining partner saw the Bacon Beer Cheese Burger and was sold. The burger was seriously juicy with a good-sized portion of fries – he was one happy guy.

I opted to go a little more clean with the Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna steak; the tuna had just kissed the grill, just the way I like it, and had a good punch of chilli and lime.

Because the menu has such a wide variety there really will be something to satisfy any belly. This is especially useful when with a big crowd with lots of differing palates.

Sweets by the Sea

Despite the fact that you will be overlooking the beach and all the bronzed bodies, the allure of the dessert menu will still get you, as it did us.

We loved the sound of the Campfire and Marshmallow – a set chocolate ganache with an oat cookie crumble, praline ice cream and torched marshmallow. It was definitely the best campfire I’ve ever enjoyed – all of the sweetness and none of the smoke!

Flip Flops and Sea Sand at Surfshack

Surfshack is going to be buzzing this holiday season that’s for sure – it has a great vibe and honestly, everything we ate was delicious. Combine this with one of the best views in the city and really friendly service and you have a recipe for surfside success. | Facebook | Instagram
