World Hunger Day with FoodBank SA
Did you know that one third of all food produced in South Africa is dumped in landfill, while more than 11 million people go hungry. FoodBank SA collects edible surplus food from manufacturers and retailers, and redistributes this food to hundreds of verified NPOs that collectively feed thousands of hungry people daily. FoodBank SA is also a proud member of the Global FoodBanking Network (GFN). “In 2014 we raised enough funds to ensure that an extra 354 people had access to a meal for a full year! Help us reach even more people this year” – Kate Hamilton, Fund Development Manager, FoodBank SA.
- Foodbank rescued 3,800,000 kilograms of food last year.
- They assist 350 verified NPOs across the country that feed 91,000 people daily.
- The average cost per meal is only R1.19, a cost-effective solution to the problem of hunger.
FoodBank SA is asking people to commit to a 12 hour fast to raise awareness around the issue of hunger on 28th May 2015, World Hunger Day. If you missed the opportunity today, you can still take part on any other day by fasting from 07h00 to 19h00 and supporting Foodbank by making donation of R40 – this is enough to cover the cost of providing food to someone for a full month!
If you are unable to fast, you can still support FoodBank SA by taking part in their social media campaign on Facebook facebook.com/foodbanksa and Twitter twitter.com/foodbanksa , by posting a picture of something they’ve recently spent R40 on and are willing to go without in order to provide a hungry person with food for a month.
