Have you noticed all those wine farms that you end up passing on your way to Franschhoek? You’re missing out on some world-class flavours by not checking them out. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best wine farms that aren’t *gasp* in Franschhoek but in Simondium.

Where to even begin. This is as close to heaven on earth one can get. This Simondium wine farm is more than just a wine farm, Babylonstoren has a fruit and vegetable garden with great botanical diversity, a spa and hotel that emulates an authentic farmstay experience. Take your pick of snacking on a decadent charcuterie board in the tasting room, having a salad and/or sandwich in the Greenhouse or going full-blown fancy at Babel. Either way, you will be happy and satisfied. When you’re done eating, chill and enjoy the gorgeous surroundings.

Vrede En Lust Wine Estate

Plaisir De Merle

Noble Hill Wine Estate

Visit their wine shop not only for a wine tasting but to peak into their wine cellar and see how their wine is made. The restaurant on site is Cosecha, which offers fresh latin cooking with spectacular vineyard views. What a great alternative to the usual bistro-style restaurants that are usually on wine estates. You can also pick up one of their latin-inspired picnic baskets and relax in their garden.

The owners have followed a ‘tread lightly’ approach to farming and from this has flowed their Tread Lightly Backsberg product range, they are also proudly carbon neutral. So sustainable farming equals sustainable wine, how great! Their tasting room offers tastings of their premium wines, Dalewood cheese pairings but also kosher tastings all in their welcoming atmosphere in their tasting room or their outdoor seated area.

Enjoy a sophisticated experience at this renowned estate. The tasting centre interior has  South African-French influences and showcases the understated elegance of the Rupert & Rothschild brand. You can taste three of their premium wines and enjoy the imported Rothschild Fromage Selection (French cheeses). At their restaurant, they have a seasonal set menu available in order to ensure a memorable fine dining experience. Their dishes are specifically created from quality local produce from the surrounding area.

The usual delicious wine tastings, yummy cheese boards and in-house restaurant are all available on site. The drawing factor of this Simondium wine farm is -their art gallery, housing a collection of contemporary, pop and modern art by South African artists. Mediums are as diverse as installation, photography, contemporary embroidery and ceramics contrast with more traditional painting and sculpture. If you are a Chardonnay drinker, make sure you try Glen Carlou’s selection, they are some of our favourites.

Positioned on the foothills on the Simonsberg Mountains, Anura proudly produces some of the most delicious red wines on the South African wine market. Their aim is to produce handcrafted wines for individuals who are looking for something unique and distinctive. Their tasting room has panoramic views overlooking vineyards, ponds and fynbos.
