Samoosa or Samosa? What’s In a Kerrie Driehoek?
Whether you call them samoosas or samosas (we say the former), you would agree that these pockets of flavour are the ideal savoury snack. From the crispy exterior to the flavourful filling, they are what we look forward to at social gatherings — apart from spending time with loved ones, of course. Traditionally filled with spiced beef mince or curried potato, this delicacy made its way from India to South Africa, where it eventually earned the name ‘driehoek kerriekoek’ or ‘kerrie driehoek,’ aptly named for its triangular shape and curried filling — our people are nothing if not creative.
Adored throughout South Africa, these crispy, golden delights are sold at corner shops, school tuckshops, and the hot food section at most grocery stores. Apart from roadhouses in Athlone, Gatesville and the streets of Bo-Kaap, we think samoosas taste best when homemade, albeit a labour of love — one that requires intricate folds and nimble fingers.
My introduction to folding samoosas was taught by the incredible Fayruza Abrahams, owner of Taste Malay, a business offering locals and international tourists cooking classes, teaching the foundation of classic Cape Malay cuisine, samoosas part and parcel. If you have yet to learn the art of folding a samoosa, these samoosa recipes will guide you…
Wagyu Mince Samoosas
As fancy as they come! These Wagyu Mince Samoosas ramp up the flavour, relying on the fat from the mince to add flavour. Seasoned with cumin, garam masala, coriander, onion and chilli powder, the mince filling is fragrant and delicious. Dunk into the yoghurt dip for a sensational bite; the pistachio nuts add a lovely crunch.
Pork Samoosas with Homemade Peach Chutney
Traditionally, you wouldn’t find pork mince in samoosas. This twist on a local classic is paired with homemade peach chutney.
Spicy Butternut ‘Samoosas’ with Mint Yoghurt
Vegetarian samoosas wrapped with phyllo pastry instead of the usual samoosa sheets. The result is a tasty, less filling version of the beloved snack. The slight acidity and freshness from the herby yoghurt balances the spicy and naturally sweet flavours of the butternut.
Sticky Brandy Nut Pudding Samoosas
Everything you love about brandy pudding in a samoosa; the crispy exterior and sticky, caramel sauce are an exceptional pairing.
