This new wine from Miles Mossop, winemaker at Tokara on the Helshoogte pass, shows beautiful expression of this variety. The grapes come from a 35-year-old vineyard in Stellenbosch and a 50-year-old vineyard in the Paardeberg. After pressing, the juice settled overnight in tank and was racked to barrels where natural fermentation took place. After a further 9 months in barrel on the lees, it was bottled after filtration. The result is a full, rich, complex wine with intense flavours of white peach, honeysuckle, dried apricot and hints of nuttiness. It has a full, rich, creamy palate, but with a crisp fresh finish. One will be rewarded with even more complexity and beautiful almond flavours which will develop should it be cellared at optimum conditions for another 3-5 years. But if you like your Chenin rather bold, then don’t delay.
