Luxury Redefined at
Taj Cape Town

Words: Julie Velosa

In a city brimming with five-star accommodations, Taj Cape Town distinguishes itself not only through its luxury amenities but also its unparalleled commitment to hospitality. Location, as they say, is everything, and Taj Cape Town commands a prime position on Wale Street, in the heart of the city, overlooking The Company’s Garden and St. George’s Cathedral and within proximity to the city’s most popular attractions. During a recent stay, we were dazzled not only by the hotel’s elegance and sophistication but even more importantly, the genuine warmth felt throughout the stay.Taj-Cape-Town-Lobby

Banking on Glamour

Drawing inspiration from its namesake, Taj Hotels infuse a sense of splendour and beauty reminiscent of the iconic Taj Mahal into all of its properties. Given that ‘Taj Mahal’ translates to ‘crown palace’, it’s no wonder that the interiors draw regal parallels. Housed within a historical building that was once the Reserve Bank, the air still carries a sense of gravitas and elegance. From marbled pillars and plush carpets to ornate gold accents and elaborate furnishings, the hotel effortlessly marries glamour with functionality.

A Bath with a View

The rooms at Taj Cape Town offer a sanctuary of comfort and style, with touches that make it that little bit more memorable. Our stay on the 14th floor afforded us breathtaking views of Table Mountain, and even on a cloudy day with a hint of drizzle, the splendour of the city was still evident. From our balcony, we could see church spires, ornate building facades and well-known landmarks, all from a stunning almost bird’s-eye perspective.Taj-Cape-Town-Luxury-Room

Enjoy the Spice & Splendour of Indian Food

Dining at Taj Cape Town is like packing your passport and jetting off to the hustle and bustle of India. Bombay Brasserie, the hotel’s flagship fine-dining restaurant, captivated us with its innovative take on Indian cuisine, exploring dishes from both the north and south and everything in between.

Executive chef, Surendra Kumar, has come to Cape Town from India and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and expertise – and a more humble gentleman you will be hard-pressed to find.

The fine-dining set menu (offered as vegetarian or non-vegetarian) is an experience of flavour starting with a chaat tasting plate, including nibbles and street food snacks like puri with vibrant fillings. Following that was a Cracked Pepper Rassam, a broth-like soup that is designed to wake up your palate, enhance your appetite and prepare you for the rest of the meal. It packed a peppery punch and delivered on every point.

From there, we ventured to the Tandoor Se section of the menu, with Adraki Lamb Chops and Chicken Tikka – both had that unmistakable smoky tandoor flavour. For mains, we sampled Lucknow Ki Lamb Nihari (spiced lamb shanks), Chingri Malai Curry (prawns in coconut milk), Butter Chicken and Kerala Alleppey Fish Curry. It sounds like a monumental amount but the portions are just right for sharing, and if you’re dining with a partner, you can pick different things and sample it all. You will leave satisfyingly full, make no mistake.

The Butter Chicken was an absolute standout, the best I have ever had and it has probably spoiled me for all others going forward (hot tip: look out for winter specials, which include Butter Chicken on Friday nights). Served with this are all the expected Indian accoutrements, including the most divine naan to mop it all up. It’s a sensational lesson in real Indian cuisine and is not to be missed.

Around the World with Whiskey

The Taj Whiskey Lounge and Lobby Bar is home to an impressive selection of spirits from around the globe. We embarked on a journey of discovery through the world of whiskey, guided by the knowledgeable and affable Mfundo, whose passion for his craft was infectious. We sampled an American, Irish, Indian, Scottish, South African and Japanese whiskey, each paired with a canapé, while Mfundo taught us the ins and outs of this age-old spirit.Taj-Cape-Town

I must also make mention of the Taj’s excellent signature cocktail menu, with a fun and flavourful selection of crafted drinks. The Mumbai Mango Madness, with Monkey Shoulder, mango, coconut syrup, drops of smoked saline and chilli foam was exceptional. Also, try a Goa Gold Martini with Hennessy, jaggery syrup, yoghurt, rosewater and pineapple juice. The barmen can also whip up a mean Whiskey Sour.

Mouthwatering Meals at Mint

Mint is the hotel’s all-day dining venue, where we truly savoured the essence of Taj Cape Town’s hospitality, from the sumptuous breakfast buffet to the exquisite al a carte dinners.

Breakfast is set over two rooms and is a veritable feast, with everything from pastries to hot breakfasts, swirly parfaits, yoghurts, fruit, fresh honeycomb and more. It also includes an Indian breakfast selection, chai, and a full-cooked menu as well. The brioche French Toast (which I had with berries instead of banana) was exceptional – by far, the best I’ve ever had and worth every calorie!

Dinner at Mint was also memorable with a text-book pull-apart braised short rib dish, crispy squid and other tasty bites. I baulked at the thought of the monumental amount of planning that must go into feeding the whole hotel such a selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For Chef Kumar, however, who is used to catering for occasions in India that run to thousands of guests at a time, this is almost a walk in the park and he seems to take it totally in his stride. Appearing at every service, and cooking in the Bombay Brasserie kitchen at night.

J Wellness Circle & Other Amenities

Beyond the culinary delights, Taj Cape Town offers a wealth of amenities to indulge the senses. From the tranquil indoor pool to a gym and rejuvenating spa, J Wellness Circle. The spa is a quiet and peaceful space, where we enjoyed a stunning massage.

Grounded in the elements – Akash, Vayu, Agni, Jal, and Prithvi (space, air, fire, water, and earth) – the spa offers a haven of peace and quiet. It’s a sanctuary where you can enjoy a sauna, take a swim, relax in the jet bath, breathe deeply, and absorb the tranquillity
