The appreciation of great produce, fine wines and crafted goodies seems to be growing on a daily basis and it can be quite tough to keep on top of all that is new and trendy. Fortunately, there are clever ideas, such as the Kokkedoor Kardoes, which take all of the hard work out of it and put all of the fun back in.

The name ‘kardoes’ translates to ‘cartridge’ and this makes complete sense since the concept is a box is packed with explosively delicious hand picked goodies that any foodie or wine lover would want in their arsenal. Those that spend lots of time watching shows that explore and discover food secrets can now be a part of this adventure without having to leave home. A curated box filled with wine, culinary delights and accompanying recipes is delivered right to your door, and the contents will change each time. The kardoes can be a once off gift, a corporate gift or a monthly subscription for the discerning foodie.

The Kokkedoor Kardoes is the brainchild of chef Nic Van Wyk; owner chef of Bistro 13 and Kan 10 in Stellenbosch, and judge of the Kyknet Television Series, Kokkedoor.

“After my extensive travels throughout South Africa I realised that there are many consumers who do not have the Winelands on their door step for wine tasting, nor a food emporium to delight their culinary senses.”

The Kokkedoor Kardoes retails at R550, which is a great price, as the minimum retail value is R650, so you’re not only getting great products, but they come at special price too. The price includes free delivery to major city centres, with a nominal surcharge for outlying areas.

You can expect the following in the May box:

De Toren La Jeunesse Delicate NV

A red from the De Toren Private Cellar. De Toren’s vineyards comprise a mere 22 hectares, uniquely positioned on the Polkadraai Hills, overlooking Stellenbosch.  Le Jeunesse is a red wine intended for early enjoyment.  It is an elegant red blend of unwooded rose and oaked Bordeaux reds.  It combines red’s seductiveness with the undeniable drinkability of white. Medium bodied and immeasurably gentle, it offers up an abundance of juicy fruit and velvety, smooth tannins that lead to a sophisticated finish. Delicious on its own as an apéritif, it’s also the perfect consort to the lingering pleasures of Spanish tapas or a platter of the finest French charcuterie.

Hoopenburg Integer 2012

From their Superior Collection, this is a Classic Rhone style blend of Syrah, Mourvedre and a Southern French varietal Carignan, which is unique to the South African Palette. An interesting and most enjoyable wine with hints of spice, leather and liquorice.

Stellenbosch Vineyards

Welmoed Pinot Grigio 2013 – an easy drinking wine with a floral character. Brilliant with creamy pasta’s or light seafood dishes.
Welmoed Merlot 2014 – a medium bodied wine with well-integrated wood and notes of mulberries and plums.  Excellent with meat dishes.

Star Hill Sauvignon Blanc

Sourced from the only wine estate in the Tradouw Highlands (between Montagu & Barrydale). This Sauvignon Blanc has crisp freshness and hints of refined grassiness with rich guava and complexity on the pallet.

Arniston Bay Infusions Lemon Grass Mint and Aloe

Low alcohol wine.  A sophisticated infusion of lemongrass, mint and aloe, enhanced by a very light spritz. Enjoy on its own, or serve with canapés or sushi

Baleia Extra Virgin Olive oil

This olive oil has a whiff of fresh cut grass. Aromas of green tomatoes, almonds, artichokes and even green apples are evident.  Medium to intense concentration of fruit flavours, it leaves a very clean finish.

Darling Sweet Toffee Tannie Evita’s Classic Toffee Spread

A local sweet treat that is handmade with love in Darling.

Pronto Mama Harissa Sauce Mild-Ish

A tangy sauce with a little bit if a bite that adds depth to stews, stir-fries, soups and grills. It’s a wonderfully versatile condiment which will become your next best friend in the kitchen.  A well balanced selection of chillies, peppers, garlic, caraway seeds, cumin and coriander are mixed with classic slow-cooked tomato sauce.  No preservatives.  Shake it up and it’s ready to use.
