Camping is one of the most accessible holidays and, if done right, can be the best way to unwind, relax and reconnect with the great outdoors. But, without the proper tools and equipment, you’re in for a nightmarish experience of rattling pots, broken plates and damaged knives. The best equipment is multi-purpose, easy-to-use and compact — three features Leatherman always delivers on.
The Leatherman® FREE™ K4X gives you the portability of a folding knife and versatility of a multi-tool. The K4X features 9 tools that stow into an aluminium handle, with every tool locking with haptic feedback, giving you confidence for any job.
With a multi-purpose knife, spring-action scissors, package opener, awl, bottle opener and three different types of screwdrivers, you’ll be everyone’s favourite camping buddy.
How to Use the Leatherman® FREE™ K4X
The Leatherman® FREE™ K4X is the perfect camping tool because it’s the only camping tool you’ll need while cooking.
Use the multipurpose knife to cut open your bag of wood, the spring-action scissors to snip a carton of milk for coffee or tea, or the package opener to help cut through the packaging of your brand new jaffle maker.
RECIPE: PEANUT BUTTER & JAM JAFFLES
Camping means cosy huddles around the campfire while enjoying all manner of sweet treats and warm, hearty meals. Seeing that we’ve recently celebrated Heritage Day, we thought we’d share this scrumptious South African classic, with a sweet twist.
If you’ve never had a jaffle, this is your time to try one out. It’s basically a toasted bread pocket cooked over the fire, stuffed with anything from curried mince to banana and nutella. We’ve chosen to stuff ours with another classic combo — peanut butter and jam. This is delicious as a sweet breakfast, or unorthodox dessert (try it with a scoop of ice cream!)
1 loaf of good quality farm-style white bread, sliced
350 g butter, softened
1 x 400 g jar crunchy peanut butter
1 x 400 g tin strawberry jam
2 jaffle irons
icing sugar for dusting (optional)
Lay the bread slices out and make sure that each one has a partner. Generously butter both sides of the bread. Add a generous layer of peanut butter followed by a generous layer of strawberry jam to one side of each sandwich. Close up the sarmies and get ready to toast.
Place 2 sarmies into the jaffle irons, then close and secure them. Trim off the excess bread (tip: use your Leatherman® FREE™ K4X for this job). Toast the jaffles for a few minutes per side over medium heat coals. You can pop them open every now and then to check the progress. When they are evenly golden brown, remove from the jaffle iron and place onto a board. Load the jaffle irons with the next sarmies. Repeat until you’ve toasted all of the jaffles.
To serve, slice the jaffles in half, dust lightly with icing sugar and serve. (Note: be careful when tucking in, the interior jam gets very hot).
