Add an Avo – Reinvent Everyday Meals with a Fresh Twist

The daily question of “What’s for supper?” can feel like one challenge too many in an already packed schedule. But here’s a simple solution – add an avo for a bit of mealtime magic.

Green-skinned or dark-skinned avos, they’re all equally nutritious and delicious.

From soups to salads and pasta to pizza, avocados offer an effortless way to elevate familiar family favourites into something fresh, flavourful and a little more exciting. With their naturally creamy texture and mild, buttery taste, avos bring a scrumptious upgrade to both traditional dishes and modern meals alike.

Mealtime Magic

South Africans are no strangers to hearty, heritage-inspired cooking, but even the most beloved classics can benefit from a subtle refresh. A spoonful of guacamole or a few slices of ripe avo can instantly enhance everything from spicy curries to pickled fish, adding balance, richness and a contemporary twist. Even everyday staples like pap, sarmies or stews take on new life with the addition of this versatile ingredient.

Add an avo

Avos always shine at the braai, pairing beautifully with grilled meats. Whether layered onto burgers, tucked into boerie rolls or served alongside perfectly cooked steaks and chops, they add both flavour and a touch of indulgence. For those looking to cut back on meat, avos are equally at home in vegetarian dishes – think loaded baked potatoes, hearty pastas or wholesome grain bowls.

Add an avo and give everyday meals a mouthwatering makeover.

They’re also a smart swap in the kitchen. Instead of heavier, cream-based sauces, mashed avo can deliver the same richness with a fresher, lighter feel. And when it comes to salads, avos are a game changer, transforming simple ingredients into satisfying, season-friendly meals all year round.

Awesome Avos

With local avo season in full swing, there’s never been a better time to experiment in the kitchen. Whether you’re refreshing a family classic or trying something new, one simple addition can make all the difference. Green-skinned or dark-skinned avos, they’re all equally nutritious and delicious.

Next time you’re stuck for ideas, add an avo and give everyday meals a mouthwatering makeover.

add an avo

Serves 4 | Preparation time: 20 minutes | Cooking time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

Avocado or olive oil, for cooking
2 small wraps, cut into 1 cm strips
2 chicken breasts, cubed
5 ml (1 tsp) smoked paprika
5 ml (1 tsp) ground cumin
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 onion, chopped
½ yellow pepper, diced
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 x 410 g tin Mexican-style chopped tomatoes
750 ml (3 cups) chicken stock
2 limes, cheeks sliced
1 avocado, pitted and sliced and/or diced
Tortilla flour wraps, cut into strips and toasted in the air fryer or shallow-fried in avocado or olive oil
Handful fresh coriander
1 red chilli, thinly sliced, to garnish (optional)

Method

Heat a splash of oil in a saucepan on medium-high and fry the wrap strips in batches for about 2 minutes, turning, until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towel.

Combine the chicken, paprika and cumin. Add another splash of oil to the same pan and fry for about 5 minutes or until golden. Season with salt and pepper. Remove and set aside.

To the same pan, add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes or until golden. Add peppers and garlic and fry for 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper.

Add tomatoes and stock, bring to a boil. Return the chicken and cook for 8 minutes. Add a squeeze of lime juice (from the centres, not the cheeks) and season with salt and pepper.

Serve topped with sliced/diced avocado, the remaining lime cheeks, crispy wrap strips, coriander leaves and chilli (if using).
