Why We Crave Sugar In Winter

You’re not imagining it – when winter hits, so do the sugar cravings. Suddenly, all you want is hot chocolate, pudding, doughnuts, cakes, bakes or just something sweet – anything to ‘scratch the itch’. But why do we crave sugar in winter? Well, it turns out, there’s some science behind the reason. It’s not just your sweet tooth and insatiable hunger at play.

Your body burns more energy trying to stay warm in winter, which is why you might crave sugar.

Winter isn’t just colder – it’s darker, too. With shorter days and longer nights, your exposure to sunlight wanes, and that has real effects on your body. Less light means lower levels of serotonin, the feel-good brain chemical that helps regulate mood, sleep and appetite. And when serotonin dips, your body starts looking for ways to boost it back up – and guess what does the trick quickly? Winter’s trusty sidekick, carbohydrates.

Sugary foods, especially refined carbs like pastries and sweets, cause a spike in insulin, which allows more tryptophan (a precursor to serotonin) into the brain. The result? A temporary bump in serotonin and a slightly improved mood, at least until the sugar crash hits.

Your body burns more energy trying to stay warm in winter, which might explain why you feel hungrier than usual. But it also wants energy fast, which is why we crave sugar during winter, rather than something that takes time to digest. Sugar is your body’s quickest source of fuel, and when it’s freezing out, your internal system doesn’t mind skipping the slow-release carbs like overnight oats in favour of a sticky cinnamon bun or whatever your ‘poison’ is.

Plus, when you’re feeling sluggish, sugar gives you that quick jolt of energy to power through that afternoon slump or survive the last meeting of the day, only until the impending crash that is.

It’s a Comfort Thing, Too

Of course, not all cravings are chemical. There’s a strong emotional and cultural link between winter and certain nostalgic treats. From festive puddings to hot chocolate rituals, cold-weather sweets often carry the comforting weight of memory. They’re wrapped up in tradition, family and the need to feel cosy when everything else feels grey and miserable. (Read all about the Proust Phenomenon and why baking feels nostalgic.)

When the temperature drops and the sky turns gloomy, we instinctively reach for the foods that feel like a hug in a bowl. And nine times out of ten, those foods are carb-heavy, sweet and warm – with the exception of ice cream, of course.

The more researched explanation as to why we crave sweet things in winter is Seasonal Affective Disorder, otherwise known as ‘SAD’ – an aptly named acronym given the condition. The winter months can be mentally taxing – the days are shorter, work pressure piles up, and your social calendar slows down. That mix of boredom and stress can send you straight to the biscuit tin. Cortisol, the stress hormone, ramps up your appetite and increases cravings for high-energy foods, mostly the sugary, fatty kind that offers immediate relief.

How Can You Curb Sugar Cravings?

Cravings aren’t always bad – they’re signals from your body and brain that something’s off. Understanding why you’re reaching for the sweets can help you find a better balance. Sometimes it’s about needing warmth, comfort or energy. Other times, your body is chasing a serotonin hit it’s not getting from the sun.

That doesn’t mean giving up your winter favourites – it just means being aware of what your body’s asking for. Maybe it’s not just the chocolate you need, but a walk outside, a proper lunch or more sleep. Or maybe it is the chocolate, and that’s totally fine too.

Your body is just adapting to the season, and honestly, if a bit of chocolate helps get you through the cold, dark months, then go ahead. If you want something less indulgent, snack on healthier alternatives. Need a fix? Settle your sweet cravings with these 4 date bark ideas.
