Tortilla Modern Mexican

Words: Michelle Lauren

Tortilla Modern Mexican has been delighting city bowl office workers for quite some time, but have recently moved to new premises in the Icon Building on Lower Long Street (you’ll find the Food Lovers Market there too) and the move suits them rather well.

Tortilla serves up quick, easy and healthy Mexican fare, ranging from burritos (there is a lower-carb version sans tortilla), salad bowls, tacos or totopos (tortilla chips), with a range of build-your-own toppings. Proteins on offer include grilled chicken, fajita veggies, grilled prawns, seared steak or their speciality, braised beef or ‘barbacoa’ which is marinated overnight and cooked until fall-apart tender. Top with a choice of veggies, rice and salsas ranging from wimp to hold-on-to-your-hat spicy, a generous serving of authentic white cheddar and guacamole.

The space is small but accessible, with the menus on the walls and glass countertops containing all the fresh ingredients to enable patrons to build and go. The staff are super friendly and efficient and happy to talk you through the array of amazing options on offer, so don’t worry if the menu seems a little daunting!

We opted for burritos with the works and sat at a table to enjoy them – they were massive and absolutely delicious. The hot salsa is worth a try but warning… it is not for the faint hearted. Burritos are available in small and medium and are very fairly priced.

Tortilla also has a new brekkie burrito on offer, so why not swing by and grab one to go, or have a seat at the quirky wood and orange tables and watch the people go by, Deluxe coffee and burrito in hand. The perfect start to any morning!
