La Petite Tarte

Old-school French charm is sitting neatly on a high street in De Waterkant. The décor is reminiscent of the palace of Versailles during dear Marie Antoinette’s occupancy, soft and whimsical – the perfect place to escape and of course buy cake. Serving tea in mismatched thin rimmed cups, you will be tempted to keep the pinky finger firmly erect while sipping away.

A must try! Their Carrot Cake is rocking. Pair with their orange creme rooibos tea.

Red Velvet Cake Co.

This boutique bakery is chock-a-block full of stunning cupcakes, delectable cheesecake, crunchy cookies, luxurious quiches and delightful savoury muffins. This is a definite on the ‘where to buy cake in Cape Town list’.

A must try! The Red Velvet Cupcakes or the Millionaires Cheesecake, either of these will fix any sugar cravings you may have.

At this gorgeous little Wynberg café, the pastry counter is a jewel-like box of delights. Sit down and enjoy any one of the amazing treats on offer, or take away something for later, the packaging in itself is just beautiful and makes for a stunning gift. This is a fabulous spot to really relax with friends and enjoy excellent food and yummy sweet treats.

A must try! The baked vanilla cheesecake with caramel and toasted macadamia nuts.

Queen of Tarts

Owned and operated by one of our long time Crush contributors – the Queen of Tarts herself, Tina Bester. The author of a range of beautiful cookbooks and baker of all manner of delicious treats that cross the spectrum from deliciously savoury to wonderfully sweet. Stop in at the cafe in Obs for a cup of coffee and a bite to eat. This popular little eatery will have you drooling with all the yummy choices on offer. (Inspired? Check out Tina’s recipes HERE). Also, the Queen of Tarts stand at the Oranjezicht City Farm Market is always crammed with goodies if you need a Saturday morning sweet fix!

A must try! The Sweetie Pie chocolate cupcakes with meringue icing, dipped in chocolate – totally indulgent!

La Belle Bistro & Bakery

Sip on tea and cake at the splendid La Belle, enjoy the tranquillity of the ocean at the Camps Bay branch or take a seat under the oaks in Constantia at The Alphen Hotel. The Constantia branch has their own unique spin on Afternoon Tea, a Cocktail and Cupcake pairing. Expect exotic flavour combinations like a slice of Lemon Meringue with a Mojito. Head chef Ludwig Van Tonder bakes up beautiful treats daily and if you can’t sit down you can buy cake and  take it home to enjoy in your own time.

A must try! The Lemon Meringue is a crowd favourite.

Charly’s Bakery

Charly’s has been ‘mucking afazing’ cakes since 1989, making itself a bit of an institution in Cape Town. The family run business even had its own reality show, Charly’s Angels, showing us that blood is thicker than water and maybe to think twice before working for the family business. They make custom cakes for all occasions, but don’t wait till then to try one, stop in at the bakery to sample all their famous treats. This is spot to buy cake for any occasion.

A must try! The hummingbird, a three-tiered carrot-like-cake sans carrot. The cream cheese icing will have you licking the box.

Set on bustling Regent Road in Sea Point, My Sugar is a  slice of pure, decadent chocolate joy. My Sugar is humble in appearance and has a with a warm and comfortable interior with accents of gold and brown. All of the chocolate creations are made on site and the owners are constantly experimenting with interesting new flavours and techniques. Don’t miss out on My Sugar’s  amazing Cake Jars! The Chocolate Cake Jar consists of moist chocolate cake drizzled with salted caramel and dark chocolate ganache, brownie bits and pretzel bark and is topped with toasted marshmallow fluff.

A must try! The Apple Pecan Cake Jar is one of their newest creations, it consists of soft apple and cinnamon cake topped with roasted apple pieces, caramelised pecan nuts and cinnamon marshmallow. Yum!

Dolce Bakery, Strand Street

Dolce Bakery has branches in Observatory and Strand Street in town. They serve up unfussy, simple but delicious food will keep you coming back for more. They’ve recently begun specialising in baking vegan cakes and goodies, as well as offering vegan sarmies and wraps.

A must try! The chocolate brownie (not vegan), is one of the best we have ever had. Or try the vegan chocolate cake, which is very moist and tasty.

Arbour Café

Inspired by the crêperies of Paris and sipping cappuccinos at European street-side cafes, Arbour Café is giving foodies a quaint taste of France in Birdhaven, Johannesburg. While traditionally not a cake per se, the Arbour Café is known for its signature filled crêpes – the traditional French sweet pancakes – in a variety of flavours. Cooked to perfection, the crêpes are served piping hot and are light, fluffy and golden, with a nice crisp edge.

A must try! The traditional French crêpes filled with decadent Nutella and brandy flambéed banana with hazelnut ice cream.

Park Café

There are a lot of things to love about Park Café – the friendly staff, unpretentious atmosphere, pretty interior and décor, and of course the delicious food. Coffee is served in individually designed Ritzenhoff cups and is made in the spectacular eagle-topped Belle Epoque coffee machine that sits on the counter. The menu is all about delicious, healthy ingredients and is all freshly prepared in the little kitchen at the back of the café. Serving everything from hearty breakfasts to tasty lunchtime dishes and not forgetting the selection of homemade sweet treats and cakes – think red velvet, cheesecake with chocolate ganache, carrot cake and so much more.

A must try! The Lemon Almond cake is light and so yum.

The Patisserie

The Patisserie, a cosy, chic, French-styled bakery and coffee shop is a firm favourite in the area to sit down for a sweet treat or take away. The silver cake stands are piled high with macarons, cupcakes and pastries of all flavours, shapes and sizes and the counter tops are laden with homemade pies and quiches.

A must try! Turkish Rose Duet cake. Pink and white rose flavoured sponge cake, sandwiched with a pistachio icing and topped with pistachios and Turkish delight

Gabriella’s Tea Room

Gabriella’s Tea Room is a fusion of Gabriella, a combination of Italian and Hungarian cuisine. Enjoy a spot of tea and cake in the secret garden courtyard, in the middle of the courtyard, lays a well-stocked dessert table. Layered with childhood classics such as homemade fudge and brownies, as well as classic tea time treats.

A must try! The Japanese cheesecake and that is why Gabriella’s Tea Room make it on the where to buy cake list in Jozi!
