Sexy Food is Good Food
Set on the bustling corner of Bree and Buitensingel Street, is the entrance to the vibey new restaurant on the block. Sexy Food opens out onto the street with wooden picnic tables and benches, topped with colourful proteas in jars. James Kuiper who opened the healthy eatery on Bree Street has a very unique food and lifestyle philosophy, the premise being that that one focuses on listening to your own body and its individual needs, rather than prescribing to a one-size-fits-all ethos or diet.
The Sexy Food eatery is an extension of the brand that has been around for a couple of years in the form of packaged food products available at Wellness Warehouse and other retailers. Delicious burger patties that are free from gluten, soy, sugar, dairy, egg and preservatives. The range caters to the Flexitarian lifestyle, which strive for eating a mainly plant-based diet.
When we went for lunch, we were welcomed by James, who you will always find either running around front of house greeting customers, or in the kitchen checking on the produce. And for him, the freshness and nutrient value of the produce is of utmost importance. He was also happy to announce to us that they have a zero waste policy at Sexy Food, everything is recycled back into the earth or reused. We were greeted with two glasses of the home brewed kombucha, bubbling with ice and fresh lemon. As I had never had the drink before, I was pleasantly surprised by the pleasant and fresh taste of the fermented brew.
What is wonderful about Sexy Food is the inclusive nature of the seating, with long tables and lots of seating, customers are encouraged to sit together in groups. The menu is written on a large black chalkboard, with about 10 different items to choose from. We tried the Black Bean Veggie – a black bean patty, tamaryaki drizzle, zoodles, dilly kraut, hummus, alfalfa, bean sprouts, kale and a crunchy seed cracker. And then the Karoo Lamb, an organic karoo lamb patty, cooked to perfection, with herbed lettuce, coriander dressing, turmeric kraut, tahini, alfalfa, sesame sprinkle, bean sprouts, and homemade mayo. Every element of the dish was incredibly tasty. You can tell that a lot of love is put into the growing of the food, and into the preparation of it.
Our verdict – it is a great spot to become a regular at. Your body will thank you for it. The idea is to fill yourself with the most tasty and nutrient rich food and at Sexy Food it is easy because everything tastes great. They also offer homemade kombucha, buchu, cultured iced tea, kefir and Evil Twin coffee for anyone just wanting to pop in for a drink.
