A Weekend Well Spent at Chapter House, Franschhoek

Chapter-House-Boutique-Hotel

Some places earn their character over time and Chapter House, Franschhoek is one of them. Tucked a street or two back from the village’s famous main road, this boutique hotel carries a history that predates the wine and tourism boom that made Franschhoek a household name. Chapter House, which is part of The Living Journey Collection, was originally a Mission House (built in 1888) and later served as the village school right up until 1974. The connection to the church next door  remains quietly present – most notably in the bell that still chimes in the yard on special occasions, a gentle reminder that you are staying somewhere that has witnessed more than a few chapters of this valley’s story.

Old Soul, New Chapter

Chapter House Franschhoek comprises two distinct areas that together form a cohesive and considered space. The original main house is full of personality – individually decorated rooms that feel in keeping with the age and character of the building, including one with a private deck and another with its own plunge pool. Evenings here are best spent in the main lounge, where a fireplace and a well-chosen local brandy make for a very easy end to the day.

The dining room, which serves breakfast and light meals, opens onto the pool area – ideal for lazy summer afternoons spent between a sun lounger and a plate of something good. Breakfast is a mix of a cold buffet section with local cheeses, charcuterie, fruit and pastries, as well as a cooked menu of favourites like Eggs Benedict and avo smash toast.

Across the garden, the newer section of the property offers modern rooms fitted with contemporary amenities and a sleeker aesthetic, while still sitting comfortably within the overall feeling of the place.

Downstairs, the Living Journey’s Zest Spa offers treatments that slot neatly into a slower, more restorative pace of travel, should you feel the need.

The Details That Make the Difference

What stays with you at Chapter House are the quieter touches. The beds are exceptionally comfortable – the kind that make an early morning feel like a genuine injustice (it’s infuriatingly hard to switch off that internal weekday clock that insists on waking you in the early hours!). However, being able to lounge in bed with a cup of coffee and wake up to the sound of the country quiet, more than makes up for it.

We especially loved the outdoor patio area, with the gentle sound of a bubbling water feature and views over the gardens. We whiled away the afternoon with a bottle of bubbly from a local wine farm and a selection of local cheeses – arguably one of the best ways to spend a slow Franschhoek afternoon.

Another equally tempting way to pass the time comes later in the day, when the hotel’s daily cake offering appears. Each afternoon, around 15h00, a freshly baked cake is set out in the dining room for guests to enjoy. Slices are best taken back to your balcony, where the late-afternoon sun on the Franschhoek mountains provides the kind of backdrop that somehow makes everything taste even better.

The Perfect Base for Franschhoek

The location is a quiet advantage. Close enough to the main street to walk down past Woolworths and into the village for dinner at one of Franschhoek’s exceptional restaurants, yet far enough removed to feel genuinely peaceful. The valley’s wine farms are a short drive in any direction, making Chapter House Franschhoek an easy and elegant base from which to explore one of South Africa’s finest wine and culinary regions at your own pace. The staff are warm and genuinely helpful – exactly what a good boutique hotel requires.

For those seeking a stay with history, heart and very good cake, this is the one.
