Wilderer, Climbing the Craft Spirit Ladder
With its recent addition of two gold medals and a silver from the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards, Wilderer Distillery has established its position as the most awarded craft gin distillery in the country. Wilderer Distillery is South Africa’s first licenced grappa distillery.
Rated by a panel, including some of the world’s foremost judges, at the Michelangelo’s, the Wilderer Fynbos Gin and Grappa Muscato Barrique received gold while the Peach Mampoer claimed silver. The Wilderer Fynbos Gin’s gold win secured its third consecutive international gold medal. The gin was recently awarded gold at the Meiningers International Spirits Awards and at the Selection Magazine competition in Germany.
“We’re honoured to have the distilling team’s hard work and dedication recognised at prestigious international events such as the Michelangelo’s”, says managing director, Christian Wilderer. “We’re especially excited to see the growing popularity and success of the Fynbos Gin among international taste connoisseurs”. The spirit is Wilderer Distillery’s first locally crafted gin by master distiller, Helmut Wilderer.
Wilderer Distillery, South Africa’s first high-tech private grappa distillery, was established in Stellenbosch in 1995 and moved to Simondium (between Paarl and Stellenbosch) in 2000. Now also operating at La Grapperia at the Spice Route Destination in Suid-Agter Paarl, the distillery uses an advanced 700-litre copper pot still to create the perfect triple-distilled spirits.
Wilderer’s range of craft spirits including the award-winning gin, grappa and mampoer are available from Wilderer Distillery at Spice Route Destination in Paarl and Pappa Grappa in Simondium. The range is also sold at major liquor outlets in most regions and online at Yuppiechef and Cybercellar.
