Situated inside the Donford BMW Motorrad, Tribe 112 Café has the atmosphere of a hip, biker boy’s den. Expect leather sofas, dark wood tables, gearbox light fixtures and engine parts dotted around as funky décor elements. The décor is quite masculine which makes for a nice change from the typical yummy mummy cafe’s. Donford aspired to create a lifestyle center, blending a BMW motorcycle dealership, with travel accessories, great coffee and delicious food.

Tribe roast their own beans at The Foundry in Woodstock: each bag of beans has a 2-week in-store shelf life, to ensure that customers always buy their coffee beans fresh. I ordered a flat white, which was brewed using their House Blend. My coffee had a delectable thick crema and a natural malty sweetness. There is always a selection of cakes, biscotti and sweet treats lined up along the barista counter to tempt you, and they are all made in house daily. Open for breakfast Monday to Friday, and breakfast only on Saturdays, it is easy to see why this is a popular spot.

For breakfast there are many things to choose from, such as the Bircher Oats Bowl; which consists of milk-soaked oats with cinnamon, spiced grated carrots and apple, topped with crushed almonds and honey. Or perhaps the Traditional Breakfast of fried or scrambled egg, bacon, pork bangers, pan-fried herbed cherry tomatoes served with sourdough toast. Tribe even has their own version of a Banting breakfast, which is their Spicy Steak and Eggs – 120 g sirloin steak basted in their spicy prego sauce served with fried eggs.

I had the French Toast, which was perfectly cooked, with a generous portion of crispy bacon and crunchy toasted almonds, drizzled with sticky maple syrup.

The Lunch menu is inspired by a road trip through the Southern Cape. You can expect a hearty Thai Green Chicken Curry served with rice, the flavorful Cape to Rio Fishcakes, or the Tribe Burger, made with a juicy homemade patty that would suit any hungry travellers appetite.

Seated at Tribe 112 patrons can drink a great cup of coffee, enjoy the view through the panoramic windows out onto Buitengracht Street, and see Table Mountain as it peeks out between the tall cityscape.

At this unique spot you are just as likely to be seated next to a vintage BMW yuppie racer, as you are a trendy Cape Town business man.
