Fresh Brew: Dive into Aegir’s A Wee Heavy 90 Shilling Ale

Words: Karl Tessendorf

Aegir Project Brewery is probably one of the most exciting new breweries in the South Africa. It’s run by brewmaster Rory Lancellas, and as well as their awesome line up of regular beers, they brew two seasonal beers. A Wee Heavy 90 Shilling is Autumn’s offering and you better believe, it tastes as good as a cold pint after a treacherous row through stormy seas.

The brew pours a dark reddish brown with an off-white frothy head. On the snout it’s got big biscuity malt character backed with hints of dark fruits and a sugary sweetness. As you dive in you’re hit with a first wave of rich malt character. Shortly after, the second wave crashes in with flavours of burnt sugar, treacle and sultanas.

It finishes off with a lingering 36 IBU bitterness and leaves you thirsting for more. The brew is robust and complex, and even though it sits at 6.5% ABV, it feels clean and approachable.
Aegir continues to impress with great beers that are interesting and well made. We think craft beer fans are going to love this one, but will it be more popular that summer’s Hopricot IPA? We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime we’re going to enjoy as many 90 shillings as we can for as long as it’s available.

Did you know? The term a “90 shilling” comes from the old Scottish method of naming a brewery’s beer? It’s based on its alcohol content and resulting tax rating. If you were buying a 90 you knew you were getting only the best the brewery had to offer.
