Seasonal Fruit and Vegetable Chart for South Africa

Words: Crush

It’s something we’re told all the time, to eat with the seasons. But why exactly should we eat seasonally? Well, there are numerous reasons. Firstly, abundance – in-season produce costs much less, as it’s more readily available and doesn’t have to be flown from halfway across the world. Secondly, it tastes better. It’s been ripened (hopefully) naturally by the weather conditions it’s most suited to and hasn’t been refrigerated for extended periods of time. Lastly, it offers you variety – different vegetables are available throughout the year. Use this Seasonal Fruit and Vegetable Chart for South Africa as a guideline and find inspiration in cooking with something new each season.

  1. Fabulous… so glad I stumbled on this… its the most extensive of a bunch of lists and it will help my husband with his cooking website, lookingatcooking.com, but it will also help me with my food tree propagation, I’m a permaculturist and I was looking up when to buy stone fruit…. its coming soon, yum ! I’ll dust of my buyer’s card for Epping market, and go and buy a big box of fruit each week, make jam and chutney with the good ones, vinegar with the vrotties and grow trees from the pitjies… now there is not a thing thrown away… even the seed husks can be used as mulch !
