HOUSE OF H
Mouth-watering steaks, juicy burgers and killer salads in a funky, laid back environment
Cape Town’s bustling CBD welcomes a newcomer to the food scene. With mouth-watering steaks, burgers and homegrown veg on offer and a funky, laid-back vibe with cool recycled décor, House of H is definitely worth a visit.
This cafeteria type restaurant is run on a waiterless system – diners are given a card on entry, which is used to swipe for food and drinks. This is a great idea, especially when dining in a large group and want to avoid the havoc of splitting the bill at the end of dinner. When you leave, you simply head to the counter and pay your bill. (Avoid losing your card, as there is a penalty fee of R1500.)
An old VW bus serves as the bar which is fully stocked with the usual suspects, as well as beer on tap and quarts in the fridge. The great thing about House of H is that it feels like home. There are large wooden tables and chairs to seat many people comfortably. It’s like being at home for a family gathering. All of the veg and the mushrooms are grown on the walls, which also act as a décor feature.
In keeping with the self-service vibe, diners go up to the meat counter to chose their cut of well-aged meat. Your selection is then picked and cooked to perfection right in front of you, on a smokey grill. We highly recommend the ribs if you’re a meat-lover, or the 16-hour roasted brisket – melt-in-the-mouth. The oyster mushroom burger is definitely worth trying if you want to skip the meat. You have the option of choosing a side; hand cut fries (which are heavenly) and salad. When you head over to the salad bar, you will blown away by the choices on offer, they will change with seasonality and availability. The homemade slaw is a cracker.
If you are in the mood for delicious BBQ, well-aged meats, and a salad bar to die for, then House of H is a must.
