Bali Beach

A well-kept secret amongst locals, this hidden cove between Camps Bay and Bakoven is the perfect spot for a secluded beach picnic, from the mountain and ocean views through to the crystal clear rock pool.

Location: Victoria Road, Camps Bay.
Good to Know: it’s tucked away in between Camps Bay and Bakoven.
Why you’ll love it: it’s secluded and not too busy.
Opening Hours: open 24 hours.


Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, Cape Point

Boasting incredible views, Cape Point is one of the most beautiful places on the peninsula. Their trails, beaches and tours have become a hit with visitors as a popular way to learn about and explore the nature reserve. Take a break from exploring by having a picnic on the serene beaches or amongst the fynbos, (specifically at Buffels Bay and Bordjiesdrif) and admire the beauty of the nature reserve and the surrounds.

Deer Park, Vredehoek

Convenient for city dwellers, Deer Park lies at the base of Table Mountain, with plenty of forest for shade and sweeping views of the city. There are beautiful walks and mountain biking trails close to the picnicking areas. Dogs are allowed and entrance is free.

De Waal Park, Oranjezicht

The park is situated in Oranjezicht in the city bowl and it is a great place for families, friends and dog lovers to hang out. It is known as a lovely social space where you can relax, meet a friend for a walk and on certain occasions listen to some amazing live music. If you live in the CBD and you’re looking for a place to spend an afternoon with friends, visit De Waal Park and take advantage of lazy sunny days.

Green Point Park

This dazzling biodiversity park is a popular spot for families – kids and adults alike will love the lush lawns, impressive play areas and an amazing view of the surroundings. It’s a great place to have family picnics – you can set up camp in a shady area or the sunshine, there are some tables in certain areas as well. There are enclosed kids parks that cater for toddlers and older kids separately. There are incredible water features too and if you look closely you might even spot some tadpoles. If you’re after something to eat or drink, be sure to visit the lovely tearoom onsite– Tea in the Park.

Keurboom Park, Rondebosch

Keurboom park is a magnificent greenbelt that is looked after and maintained by the Keurboom Park Association. Part of the reason for the park is to provide an environment to protect Keurboom trees and as such you will see several of them in the park. It is a great place to walk your dog and they are allowed off leash except for in the enclosed kid’s play area.

Location: Squirrels Way, Rondebosch
Good to know:  the park is looked after by volunteers and you can donate to its upkeep.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Constantia

Easily one of the most beautiful picnic spots in Cape Town. Kirstenbosch Gardens is a lovely place to relax, take a leisurely stroll along under the tree-lined canopy and enjoy what nature has to offer. It is also a great spot for kids as they can run around the gigantic garden, see the dinosaur statues and learn about the plants all over Kirstenbosch. If you’re planning on spending the day there, take your own picnic basket filled with delicious goodies or visit their Tea Room and put your own goodie basket together.

Maynardville Park, Wynberg

Maynardville has become known for its open-air movie screenings, so you can guarantee that it’s one part suited to picnics. Its vast healthy lawns are perfect for laying down a blanket and whiling away a couple of hours.

Newlands Forest

Southern suburbanites love Newlands Forest because it is a great spot to take a relaxing walk or unwind after a long day at the office. During the weekends you’ll find plenty of visitors will be braaing or a picnicking. There are a number of spots for you to put down your blanket and chill out. We recommend sitting alongside the stream as it adds to the tranquil ambience of the forest. If the heat becomes a bit much, you can take a dip in the freshwater river and cool off.

The Company’s Gardens, CBD

The Company’s garden almost needs no introduction. It’s the oldest garden in South Africa, having been established in 1650 by the first European settlers. This garden is steeped in local culture and is frequented by people working in the area who come through to enjoy their lunch. Pack a picnic, find a shady spot and enjoy this iconic, inner-city green belt.

Famed forest and picnic spot, Tokai Forest, is located is located deep in the leafy green nature of the southern suburbs. It’s famous for it’s hiking and biking trails yet it is also a peaceful place to have a picnic. The spacious forest is perfect for large groups and has braai facilities and picnic spots are shady and peaceful. There is also a tearoom and an Arboretum to visit.

Silvermine Nature Reserve, Ou Kaapse Weg

Part of the Table Mountain National Park, Silvermine Nature Reserve has extensive trails and a large water reservoir with allocated picnic areas, which are easily accessible from the entrance on Ou Kaapse Weg.
